As the author of this image, I thought I'd give bit of background. This image began life as an 8x10" black and white Polaroid shot in 1989. Working with 8x10 is difficult and time-consuming and if one is not careful, full of unwanted surprises. The Polaroid process is fraught with with issues of Polaroid's own making, as the transfer from the paper negative to the positive print always provides one with many very small bubbles which on the print, become white dots. As this image is a digitized version, I spent several hours carefully retouching out the white dots. While I was there, I hand-colored the sunfish and the sky, while leaving the rest of the image in b/w. I like the combination of b/w and hand-coloring, as it allows the viewer to realize the roots of photography. I have made this partial hand-coloring a style on hundreds of my originally b/w images. I think my favorite is Bumper Cars, the barbershop, or images where a single splash of color sets the mood. AVIS is such shot and is also self-portrait.

I have a new collection of early 20th Cent portraits of a boy who grew up rich and eventually had three snotty children, one of whom I lived with for 18 years. I'm still equipped with a titanium...
